SDVMA Summer Continuing Education Meeting - May 29 – 30, 2025

Program Description

 SDVMA is pleased to present the 2025 Summer Meeting Continuing Education meeting on Friday,  May 30^th  from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Oacoma.

 The meeting will kick off with a pre-meeting social reception on Thursday, May 29^th  from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the meeting venue.  Join us for drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres and conversations with meeting attendees and sponsors.

 This year’s meeting topic is “Ultrasound for the Small Animal Practitioner” presented by Erica Fields, DVM, DACVR, and Trisha Oura, DVM, DACVR.  The program will focus on providing information to increase practioner comfort with everyday use of ultrasound in their practice. The morning lecture will cover machine physics to optimize image quality, the approach to major abdominal organs focusing on anatomic landmarks and normal organ appearance, and a discussion of point of care ultrasound of the thorax.  An optional hands-on wet lab will provide participants with the opportunity to practice image acquisition and organ identification on live patients while working in small groups under instructor supervision. The wet lab will allow tailoring of instruction to individual participant skillset.

 The Animal Industry Board will present an update and information on new electronic records requirements as part of the afternoon technical program.  Industry speakers will also present lectures as part of the afternoon program.

About the Presenters

 Erica L. Fields, DVM, Dipl. ACVR

Dr. Fields received her DVM from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at VCA Berwyn and VCA Aurora in the Chicago suburbs, where she was voted Intern of the Year. Dr. Fields enjoyed 2 years as a small animal general practitioner before returning to North Carolina State University for a diagnostic imaging residency. She became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2010, moving into an academic career at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

 Wanting to return to her North Carolina roots, Dr. Fields joined IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants in 2013 and moved to a small farm with her husband. They have 2 adventurous daughters and a motley crew of horses, sheep, goats, chickens, dogs, and cats who keep them busy. Dr. Fields enjoys riding horses with her daughters in shows across the southeast. She loves her career in telemedicine, as it allows her to work with an amazing team of specialists and general practitioners around the world.

 Trisha J. Oura, DVM, Dipl. ACVR

A New Hampshire native, Dr. Oura attended Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and went on to complete a rotating small animal internship and diagnostic imaging residency at North Carolina State University. She became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology inn 2012. Following her residency, Dr. Oura worked in teleradiology and private practice before joining the faculty at Tufts University as an Assistant Professor. Here she focused on  building her skills in exotic animal imaging, and curriculum redesign, and in 2018, she received the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teaching Award. Later that year, Dr. Oura embarked on  a new adventure by relocating to the San Diego area to work in private practice. Since then, she has worked as a consultant with the Brookfield Zoo Radiology Consulting Service, Dragonfly Imaging, and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Association.
